LTcam

Non-destructive testing with active laser thermography

LTcam systems use the flying spot method for crack detection in metal, ceramic, and polymer components. A surface scanning method is used to cover very large measurement areas quickly and without contact.

Applications

  1. Crack testing on turbine blades
  2. Non-contact crack testing in the reactor area (nuclear power)
  3. Weld seam inspection
  4. Components with complex geometry
  5. Crack testing on non-metallic components

How does inspection with LTcam work?

LTcam scans a laser line across the material, while a stationary wide-angle VIS-camera captures the overall scene. The IR camera follows the moving laser line, monitoring heat flow before and after it. Disruptions in lateral heat transfer reveal defects and anomalies, which are detected and analyzed by the software.

Typical Workflow of an LTcam Inspection

1. Excitation via Laser

A precise line laser (up to 200 W) moves across the surface and generates a short thermal pulse.

2. Heat flow in the component

The heat flow is uniform – until it is disrupted by defects such as cracks or delaminations.

3. Detection using an infrared camera

A high-resolution IR camera detects these thermal differences in real time.

4. Software-assisted analysis

Image evaluation is performed automatically using the edevis software DisplayImg – including defect detection, visualization, and inspection report.

Standalone system

LTCam is a standalone system based on laser excitation – and uses the same powerful software platform as all edevis systems.

LTcam is controlled by the specific DisplayImg LTcam software. It combines the wide-angle VIS camera and the infrared scanning system, allowing to seamlessly select and inspect large areas.
